Beth Wittenberg
January 2015 Art Exhibit

The Rochester Public Library is pleased to present the work of contemporary Rochester artist, Beth Wittenberg. She received a MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art with an emphasis in Sculpture and Painting. She relocated to the Seacoast from Washington, DC in the fall of 2003.

Wittenberg says she is influenced by art brute, outsider art, children's art, craft, and her mother's very large antique collection of Aynsley Fine Bone China.  She considers herself a colorist and finds that colors seem brighter and more vibrant on the Seacoast.  She says, “I’m influenced by whimsy and the cast of characters I create all live in a fanciful world where they coexist to communicate with each other.”

“My process is simple. I begin with nothingness. The white of the paper; or the white of the canvas. I apply color very rapidly and build a surface based on intuitive decisions as guided by the Great Spirit. After the paint has dried I look into the painting with a non critical eye and it begins to speak to me. I have no preconceived notion of what the painting is or what its meaning is. I begin to draw and one line informs the next and in the end I have created another character in my vast world. I refer to these characters as "creatures". I believe I am a medium and am tapping into a larger dialogue. What survives the art making process is the connection I’ve made between the art media and the universal collective unconscious. The meaning is then revealed to me, and other times it takes months to decipher the message.

I invite you into my world, one of personal transformation, to witness my cast of characters and reflect on the universal messages herein.”
