October 2026 - Rita Pomerleau

Rita is from Eliot, Maine.

She started painting as an adult in 2012 after receiving her father’s old pochade box.

Rita writes: After inheriting my father’s pochade box, I felt led to take painting classes. I had never painted before. I first started with the very patient and talented Sean Beavers at Sanctuary Arts, in Eliot. We started with gray scale and color charts. It was a whole new world for me. Step-by-step and sometimes painful—I was intrigued.

When we went outside en Plein Air, I was totally hooked!

I have been painting now for about 15 years. Painting outside en plein air is still my favorite. Seeing the light and subtleties of colors and trying to get them on the canvas before the light changes excites me! Landscapes are my favorite. Sometimes just the shadows on a house or finding the perfect color green is what makes the whole painting.

I continue to take classes from other artists I admire and I read.

Lately as well as oil painting, I have been trying other mediums working with pencils, acrylics, watercolors, and tapestry weaving. It’s a fun challenge.

Painting makes me happy. I hope what I paint makes others happy as well.
